What is CPPS
Join the sciences focused on social problems through the systematic management!

The College of Policy and Planning Sciences was established in 1977 with an interdisciplinary program. We have kept the firm idea about "interdisciplinarity" for approximately 30 years and achieved various educational remarks. At present, the number of graduates is more than three thousands and they are actively working as professionals or experts.
The educational mission of our college is "to cultivate human resources who can analyze complicated social phenomenons based on necessary academic fields and design the systems solving these problems from the view points of engineering". The college consists of three majors such as Social and Ecnomic Planning, Management Science and Engineering and City Planning. Each major has their own faculty members with specific majors and is managed by their own educational direction.
In the fiscal year of 2004, we introduce the "Area" program and a revised system in which students can fix a major and start their study related to the profession at the end of the first year of the college as curriculum reforms. We also give specific classes and seminars in the Interdisciplinary Area for "the aging of the population and the declining birthrate in the 21st century" and for "reviewing future social infrastructure policies", Japan's society faces today as urgent problems. The Interdisciplinary Area consists of professors from specific areas of study and represents a new attempt that is offered only by the College of Policy and Planning Sciences.
Everybody, why don't you join the sciences focused on social problems through the systematic management!
Distinctive features of the College of Policy and Planning Sciences
The College of Policy and Planning Sciences is a unique educational organization aimed at fostering interdisciplinary individuals who are capable of taking an engineering-based approach to social problems and finding solutions to them. It consists of three major courses: Social and Economic Sciences, Management Science and Engineering and Urban and Regional Planning.
In today's public (national and local governments) and private (business) sectors, strong emphasis is being placed on the necessity of introducing a scientific way of thinking into the policy-making and planning process. This is because social problems have become increasingly complicated and interdependent, making it difficult to solve the problems simply by applying theories from only one field of conventional scientific discipline. The educational goal of the College is to develop individuals possessing the ability to make decisions on and solve those problems.
A total of 120 students are admitted to the College each year. They get to choose the course they want to major in in their sophomore year.
As regards the faculty lineup, excellent academicians in Japan and from abroad have been recruited from various fields without sticking to the framework of the humanities or science. Facilities for practical training include equipment for supporting specific applications and practical training, such as the latest workstation systems and Internet access.
Position of the College of Policy and Planning Sciences
University of Tsukuba
Thirty years have passed since the University of Tsukuba was established as the center of education and research at the Tsukuba Science City, which is located at the foot of Mt. Tsukuba. It is a relatively young university that has pledged on the occasion of its 20th anniversary to make a further leap forward to becoming the MIT of Japan. Taking over the tradition of the Tokyo University of Education, which boasts of a history of 100 years, the University of Tsukuba is proud of its unique guiding principle that is not found in conventional universities and its outstanding characteristics as an educational and research institution. In short, the University of Tsukuba is constantly reforming itself under its guiding principle of developing future-oriented individuals with an international perspective, who possess profound knowledge and problem-solving abilities.
