As one of the leading Universities of study abroad programs dispatching students to countries such as the United States, Australia and Malaysia and offering study abroad programs for students from foreign countries, University of Tsukuba offers various international exchange programs.
The student housing located at a northern and southern part of the campus holds a housing capacity of approximately 4,300 people offering highly convenient study environment to students. Freshmen are eligible to move in on a preferential basis. The housing facilities are designed for both single students and families. Each housing facility has common rooms, laundry room, kitchens and toilets. There is a common building for each section and has amenities necessary for everyday life including a building manager office, dining hall, bathroom, store, barber shop and beauty salon. Monthly rent is approximately 12,000 yen excluding the cost of utilities. Private-owned apartments around the university require a monthly rent of 30,000 yen to 50,000 yen and considerable amount of housing expense can be saved in Tsukuba compared to universities in Tokyo. Students living in the Tokyo or Chiba area can commute from their homes via Tsukuba Express train and it only takes 45 minutes from Tsukuba to Ueno, meaning that they do not necessarily have to find a place to stay while in the university.
University of Tsukuba offers advantageous financial supports for tuition to accommodate with their financial circumstances, such as the financial aid from the Japan Student Services Organization. Additionally, students may receive a supplementary assistance from other students who participated in the educational assistant work. Also, the university offers part time employment service such as tutor jobs.
Number of events is hosted throughout the year including the Sohosai (university festival), Yadokari festival (housing festival) and athletic festival. Activities outside the university are also active. University of Tsukuba has produced many famous artists and Olympic athletes.
